Who is it for?

The course is designed to help make the transition from childhood to adolescence as smooth as possible for both the young person and the parents.  It aims to prevent severe behavioural and emotional problems in young people by enhancing the knowledge, skills and confidence of parents.

 

Aims of the course:

To enable parents with similar aged children to share experiences and give mutual support To boost parent/teen relationship To increase the understanding of the developmental steps of adolescence and how these can be supported positively To identify the effects of different parenting styles To develop communication, negotiation and problem-solving skills To discuss strategies for handling common problems in adolescence.

 

Expected outcomes for parents:

  • Enhanced parental self-efficiency and self esteem
  • Increased knowledge of typical child development and behaviour
  • Improved ability to respond sensitively to the child’s emotional needs
  • Increased knowledge of how to promote positive emotional behaviour
  • Modified attitudes and discipline strategies
  • Improved monitoring and supervision practices

  • Increased self-esteem and confidence
  • Reduction in behaviour problems
  • Improved decision making

 

Course Dates

The course lasts for six weeks and will run between the following dates in 2013:

  • Monday 3rd June – Monday 8th July 1pm – 2.30pm
  • Monday 9th Sept – Monday 14th Oct 1pm – 2.30pm
  • Monday 4th Nov – Monday 9th Dec 1pm – 2.30pm
