Domestic Abuse

There are over 1 million female victims of domestic abuse in England and Wales.  In the UK, more than one in four women and one in six men will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime, often with years of psychological abuse.  You can be a victim of domestic abuse at any age; adults, children and teenagers are all affected.

Domestic Abuse doesn’t always mean physical violence:

  • Do you feel scared of your partner, especially of disagreeing with him or angering him?
  • Does he check up on you all the time and refuse to trust you?
  • Does he isolate you by making it hard to see your family and friends?
  • Does he manipulate you by withholding affection, lying to you, blaming you, shouting and swearing at you?
  • Does he use threats to control you, such as saying he will find you if you try to leave, your children will be taken away or you will be deported?
  • Does he withhold money or food from you or claim control over your wages or benefits?
  • Does he repeatedly criticise you, such saying you are worthless, and humiliate you in front of others?

If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, you may be experiencing domestic violence.
